IF YOU’VE BEEN on Twitter this morning, chances are you’ve seen people talk about a music festival called Fyre Festival that has, by all accounts, gotten off to a fairly horrific start.
Let’s go back to the beginning.
Fyre Fest is a music festival founded by rapper Ja Rule and his business partner Billy McFarland.
It takes place in the Bahamas and costs upwards of $3,495 to attend. Among the acts booked to play at it were Blink 182, Major Lazer, Disclosure, Migos and Skepta.
It describes itself as a “cultural moment created from a blend of music, art and food”.
Right so.
Last winter, Ja Rule enlisted hundreds of models and influencers to share details of the festival on social media, including Bella Hadid and Emily Ratajkowski.
And miraculously, people were ~influenced~ into spending thousands of dollars to attend a music festival.
Per Vanity Fair:
Fyre’s Insta-happening in the middle of December helped sell out general admission tickets before any of the performers were announced, which isn’t totally unheard of. Coachella regularly breaks ticket sales records before the music lineup is released. But while Coachella sells out on reputation, Fyre sold plenty on a promise: you could have a sexy time on a beach with a piña colada in hand and, oh, maybe Major Lazer will be there, too (they will).
And you thought people were bad for spending €250 on Electric Picnic tickets, huh?
Yesterday, attendees arrived to the Bahamas to find “mass chaos” and “no organisation”.
This was the luxury accommodation people forked out thousands of dollars for.
Some people arriving to the Bahamas were told that they could no longer come to the festival due to capacity issues and were left stranded on a plane.

Just as all of this was unfolding, Blink 182 announced that they would not be performing at the festival for fear that they couldn’t deliver a quality performance.
Since then, Fyre Festival have released a statement advising attendees that they are “working to comfortably accommodate guests and deliver a great experience”.
They have also advised that anyone with plans to travel to the venue tomorrow will not be granted entry.
Due to circumstances beyond our control, and in line with a culture of safety, all inbound charter flights to the Exumas have been canceled. Your ticket and any funds uploaded to your RFID band will be refunded.
